Dialysis Access and Venous Access — When the Lifeline Needs Protection

For people who need dialysis three times a week, their vascular access isn’t a medical footnote — it is literally a lifeline. An AV fistula that narrows or clots can jeopardize the next dialysis session. A port that stops working interrupts chemotherapy.

Interventional radiology has assumed a central role in vascular access care. With image-guided precision, we can create access, maintain it, treat complications immediately — and thereby spare patients from repeated, invasive procedures.

AV Fistula and AV Graft — Treatment of Stenoses and Thromboses

Narrowings or occlusions of an arteriovenous fistula or graft compromise dialysis efficiency and need prompt treatment. Balloon angioplasty, stent placement, and catheter-directed thrombolysis reopen the fistula — minimally invasively, often in a single session.

Tunneled Hemodialysis Catheter

When an AV fistula is not possible or not yet mature, a tunneled hemodialysis catheter is placed through the jugular vein into the right atrium. We implant, exchange, and treat catheter-associated complications such as fibrin sheaths — under imaging guidance, gently.

Peritoneal Dialysis Catheter

The peritoneal dialysis catheter enables home dialysis via the peritoneum. We implant it minimally invasively under imaging guidance and treat malposition or dysfunction interventionally.

Port-a-Cath

A port is a permanent, fully implanted subcutaneous access device for chemotherapy, long-term infusions, or parenteral nutrition. We implant ports under ultrasound and fluoroscopic guidance — outpatient, under local anesthesia, in 20–40 minutes.

PICC Line

A PICC line (peripherally inserted central catheter) is placed through an arm vein into the superior vena cava, enabling reliable intravenous therapy for weeks to months — without repeated venipunctures, and more comfortable for the patient.

PTCD — Percutaneous Transhepatic Cholangiodrainage

When a tumor or scar tissue blocks the bile duct, bile backs up in the liver — leading to jaundice and risk of infection. PTCD places a catheter through the skin and liver directly into the blocked biliary system under imaging guidance. Immediate relief. In a second step, a permanent stent can be placed and the catheter removed.

Nephrostomy

When kidney stones, tumors, or scar tissue block urine drainage, urine backs up in the kidney — risking permanent kidney damage or urosepsis. Percutaneous nephrostomy places a thin drain through the skin directly into the renal pelvis under imaging guidance. Immediate relief. No operating room, no general anesthesia.
